Robert Taylor Collins, Collins High class of 1967, is honored for his outstanding track performances for the local school and for Southern University at Baton Rouge, LA. Collins also played football for the Red Devils and was along yardage threat every time he touched the ball.
In most of his high school track meets, Robert was high point man-usually placing first in the 100, 220, and 440 yard dashes.
In the 1967 Regionals, he won four first places-in the broad jump, 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash, and 440 yard dash. These events made him a threat in the state meet, but he pulled a muscle in the Friday night qualifying. That eliminated him from the broad jump. However, he scored all 16 of Oak Hill’s points. He had equaled the state record of 9.8 seconds in the 100 yard dash at the Gazette Relays, but in the state meet he was edged in the finals by Lee of Logan. He won the 220 yard dash in a record setting time of 21.6 seconds and the 440 yard dash in 49.9 seconds.
In his one year of competition at Southern University, his best times were 9.3 seconds in the 100 yard dash, 19.0 seconds in 220 yard dash on a straightaway and 21.0 seconds in the 220 yard dash on a curve.
Robert served in the US Army from 1973 to 1977.
